Philippines: Fisherman Narrowly Escapes After Octopus Latches Onto His Face
PUERTO PRINCESA, PHILIPPINES — The ocean is full of unpredictable encounters, but one fisherman in the island province of Palawan experienced a truly terrifying battle for survival when an octopus suddenly attacked and clung to his face.
The Incident Details
On July 10, a local fisherman named Jaser Cervantes was out on a routine fishing trip near Puerto Princesa. The calm day took a dark turn when an octopus suddenly leaped up and wrapped all eight of its powerful arms tightly around his head and face.
The ambush was so sudden and intense that the fisherman had almost no time to react.
Moments of Terror and the Struggle for Air:
- Suffocation Risk: The creature’s suction cups stuck to Jaser’s skin like industrial rubber disks. The situation escalated into a life-threatening emergency when one of the suction cups completely sealed over his mouth, cutting off his air supply.
- Bare-Handed Failure: Jaser desperately tried to peel the tentacles off his face one by one using his bare hands, but the animal’s grip was incredibly rigid.
- A Desperate Measure: Running out of breath, Jaser was forced to grab a piece of bamboo. He repeatedly struck the octopus until its grip finally loosened enough for him to pull it off and save his own life.
The Fisherman’s Statement
After finally removing the sea creature, gasping for air, and recovering from the shock, Jaser recounted the terrifying ordeal:
“The octopus I caught was very hard to control. It felt like it was going to completely tear off my face.”
An Unexpected Ending
Despite the harrowing attack and the near-death experience, Jaser did not seek revenge on the creature. In a surprising act of compassion, once he had caught his breath, he safely released the octopus back into the ocean.
Why is an Octopus’s Grip So Powerful?
According to local fishermen and marine experts, this kind of defensive reaction is actually quite common. When an octopus is caught or feels a sudden threat, its immediate instinct is to latch onto whatever is closest.
An octopus’s suction cups are naturally designed to anchor the animal to slippery underwater rocks despite the crushing force of ocean currents.
